Epidemiology and Early-Stage T1D
Theme Lead: Associate Professor Aveni Haynes
Associate Professor Haynes leads the epidemiology and early-stage type 1 diabetes research in the Centre. Her research vision is to improve health outcomes for kids diagnosed with diabetes. About 140,000 Australian children have type 1 diabetes (T1D), and an average of three children are diagnosed every day. These children need lifelong daily insulin treatment to stay alive. Theme Lead: Dr Mary Abraham
Dr Mary Abraham leads the Technology research in the Centre with Professor Tim Jones. She is also a paediatric endocrinologist based at Perth Childrne's Hospital. Read more about Dr Mary Abraham:
Exercise and Nutrition
Theme Lead: Dr Craig Taplin
Dr Craig Taplin leads the Exercise and Nutrition research at the Centre with Professor Liz Davis. He is also the Clinical Lead for Diabetes at Perth Children’s Hospital with interests including the clinical implementation of diabetes technology, the impact of exercise on glycaemic control, and improving youth and parental mental health outcomes in type 1 diabetes. Mental Health and Wellbeing
Theme Lead: Dr Keely Bebbington
Dr Keely Bebbington is a Clinical Psychologist who leads the mental health and wellbeing research at the Centre. Her work aims to understand and significantly improve mental health and psychosocial functioning in youth with T1D and their families. She has a particular interest in helping young people and their families adjust to living with T1D and to reduce the burden of managing this chronic condition. Read more about Dr Keely Bebbington:
Data Platforms
Theme Lead: Helen Clapin
Helen is the DiabHQ Project Manager and Data Theme Lead for the Centre. The DiabHQ project commenced in 2023, delivering a cutting-edge digital platform that integrates diabetes data from many different sources so that it can be used more effectively by clinicians, researchers, patients and families. Helen's areas of research interest include, data-driven decision-making in health care, empowering patient and families in self-management, clinical care and associated outcomes in children with T1D and models of care for children diagnosed with T1D.
