What is the Rio Tinto Children's Diabetes Centre?
The Children's Diabetes Centre is an intergrated clinical and research centre working together to improve the lives of children, adolescents and young adults living with diabetes.
Led by two of Australia’s foremost diabetes researchers and clinicians, professors Liz Davis and Tim Jones, the Centre includes researchers at the The Kids Diabetes Research Team and the qualified health professionals at the Diabetes Service at Perth Children's Hospital (PCH).
The Centre conducts research into type 1 diabetes (T1D) and childhood onset type 2 diabetes (T2D). In WA, about 160 children are diagnosed with diabetes every year, and the number is increasing.
The Centre also encompasses the first JDRF Global Centre of Excellence in Australia, joining other locations as one of just five Centres worldwide. This Centre of Excellence is the only paediatric and clinically focused one in the world.
Mission
To undertake research that is translated into effective clinical management, ensuring patients living with diabetes receive the best evidence-based care available.
Vision
To reduce the morbidity and mortality of type 1 diabetes and its burden on children and their families.
The team is working to improve outcomes and equity of access by accelerating new therapies and evidence into practice. We have a goal to improve life expectency by closing the 10-year mortality gap and deliver more effective models of care.
Our connection to community and partnerships with both families and government is paramount to the work we do.
