Dr Shaun Teo and Dr Paul Fournier awarded Diabetes Australia grants

A big congratulations to our The Kids and UWA researchers Dr Shaun Teo and Dr Paul Fournier who have both been awarded $70,000 grants for their diabetes research projects, under the 2023 Diabetes Australia Research Program (DARP).

A big congratulations to our The Kids and UWA researchers Dr Shaun Teo and Dr Paul Fournier who have both been awarded $70,000 grants for their diabetes research projects, under the 2023 Diabetes Australia Research Program (DARP).

Both researchers are part of the Rio Tinto Children's Diabetes Centre: a JDRF Global Centre of Excellence at The Kids and are among 35 recipients nationwide receiving DARP funding this year.

Dr Shaun Teo and Rachel Lim (pictured) have been awarded funding to expand their successful Coaching Resources project that began in 2021, interviewing youth living with type 1 diabetes (T1D), parents and community sport coaches to identify what T1D educational resources are needed to upskill those coaching young people with T1D and encourage better uptake in community sport from those living with T1D.

This latest funding will go towards the next phase of the project ‘Developing Educational Exercise Resources to Improve Awareness and Knowledge of Type 1 Diabetes within Community Sport Settings’ which aims to develop these educational exercise resources and implement them into community sport settings across Australia.

Dr Paul Fournier has been awarded DARP funding for his project ‘Does Drinking Water Before and During Exercise in the Heat Increase the Risk of Hypoglycaemia in People with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus?’

Diabetes Australia Group CEO Justine Cain said she was delighted to announce funding for these potentially game-changing projects that could improve the lives of the nearly 1.5 million Australians who live with diabetes.

“These research projects create hope for people living with diabetes and provide vital funding to help ensure Australia’s best and brightest researchers want to work in diabetes research,” Ms Cain said.
