Access to the new Dexcom G6 sensor

Perth Children’s Hospital’s Diabetes Clinic has had a few queries about the new Dexcom G6 sensor, which recently became available in Australia.

Perth Children’s Hospital’s Diabetes Clinic has had a few queries about the new Dexcom G6 sensor, which recently became available in Australia.

The G6 allows for 10-day sensor wear without requiring blood glucose calibrations and can pair with the Tandem t:slim pump, which can be updated to include Basal-IQ technology (a predictive low glucose suspend function), plus Control-IQ technology (a built-in algorithm to adjust basal insulin delivery and give automatic correction doses of insulin) once it becomes available in Australia.

Like other CGM makes and models, users can see glucose levels in real time, with trend arrows, glucose history, alerts, alarms, and the ability to have up to five followers.

Frances Leclercq, Clinical Nurse Specialist (Diabetes Technology) at PCH, said the Dexcom G6 was added to the NDSS CGM subsidy list on January 18 for Tandem pump users only at this stage.

“Current Tandem pump users in our clinic should have received an email from our team with paperwork attached to update their Tandem pump software as well as change their NDSS subsidy to include the Dexcom G6,” she said.

If your child is a Tandem pump user and you haven’t received this email, please contact PCH.DiabetesCGM@health.wa.gov.au
