End-of-year exams may be far from the minds of Year 12 students managing Type 1 Diabetes but now is the time to get the process started for obtaining special provisions for ATAR exams from the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA).
While the April 5 deadline has now closed for students with pre-existing health conditions, enrolled schools of students newly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes can still submit an application.
The Authority recognises that access to timed assessments can be significantly affected for students with a diagnosed disability, impairment or medical condition such as Type 1 Diabetes and consequently, allows for adjustments to be made for these students so they can complete assessments on the same basis as other students. Schools are also able to apply the same adjustments to other school-based timed assessments prior to final ATAR exams.

- Sickness/Misadventure - the 'safety net' if a student experiences a severe or emergency health situation immediately before or during an exam.
Application forms can be downloaded from the above link. You will need “section E” to be filled out and signed by a doctor at your diabetes appointment before handing it back to your school.

For injuries or illnesses diagnosed after this date, your school's examination coordinator will need to contact the School Curriculum and Standards Authority on 9273 6300. Please note, applications and enquiries are handled by the individual student's school.***

What the school must do:
- Determine whether the student’s request for special examination arrangements is appropriate and consistent with the eligibility requirements. Apply the same adjustments to other school-based timed assessments.
- Administer tests/essays where required in the application.
- Complete the application form for special examination arrangements and submit to the Authority along with all supporting documentation by the due date.
- Advise the student of the approved arrangements and implement these in school assessments.
What the School Curriculum and Standards Authority will do:
- Make a decision for each of the examinations on the application, based on evidence provided.
- Advise the school of all approved arrangements.
- Provide the special arrangements during the ATAR course examinations.
