ATAR special provisions still open for newly diagnosed

The deadline for ATAR exam special provisions is still open for newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes patients.

End-of-year exams may be far from the minds of Year 12 students managing Type 1 Diabetes but now is the time to get the process started for obtaining special provisions for ATAR exams from the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA).

While the April 5 deadline has now closed for students with pre-existing health conditions, enrolled schools of students newly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes can still submit an application.

The Authority recognises that access to timed assessments can be significantly affected for students with a diagnosed disability, impairment or medical condition such as Type 1 Diabetes and consequently, allows for adjustments to be made for these students so they can complete assessments on the same basis as other students. Schools are also able to apply the same adjustments to other school-based timed assessments prior to final ATAR exams.

Information for schools, health professionals and students/families can be found at:

This link provides information on:

  • Special Examination Arrangements - students/families should refer to the downloadable 'Information for Candidates' (especially pg 13 for Diabetes Provisions) and 'Application for Special Examination Arrangements'.
  • Sickness/Misadventure - the 'safety net' if a student experiences a severe or emergency health situation immediately before or during an exam.

Application forms can be downloaded from the above link. You will need “section E” to be filled out and signed by a doctor at your diabetes appointment before handing it back to your school.

***Special examination arrangement applications for pre-existing conditions closed April 5, 2018. For injuries or illnesses diagnosed after this date, your school's examination coordinator will need to contact the School Curriculum and Standards Authority on 9273 6300. Please note, applications and enquiries are handled by the individual student's school.***
