Avid cyclist Theo Grant completes Everesting event

WA teenager Theo Grant has been living with type 1 diabetes since he was two-years-old, but the condition hasn't stopped him from setting big goals and achieving them.

This year he was inspired to complete an Everest cycling event - that's cycling the accumulation of Mt Everest (8848 metres) non stop, without sleep.

Find out from Theo how he achieved this feat, in his words below:

“I'm Theo, I'm 14 and have been type 1 since 2 and a half years old, living in the Philippines. I love cycling and one day I wish to ride with Team Novo Nordisk as they are a fully type 1 diabetic team. At the start of the year I got inspired to complete an Everest.

An Everest is when you climb up the same hill until you hit the total accumulation of Mt Everest (8848 mtrs) without sleep. I wanted to do this to push my body as far as it could go and prove that even with type 1 diabetes you can do anything you want.

On the day I woke up at 3am to get my bike into the car and dad and I drove out to the hill I would be doing this on. I knew the challenge was big and was expecting it to take 16 to 20 hours of riding.

We had packed so much food I couldn't believe how much there was. To ride and have enough fuel for a challenge this big my goal was to eat 70 carbohydrates an hour.

I started well and was eating enough for quite a long time into the ride, At about 12 hours in I couldn't eat as I felt sick so I had to change my strategy to putting sugar in my bottles and drinking that to get the carbs in.

After 25 hours and 41 minutes, 335kms and 9016 meters of elevation. I completed my ride, I was too tired to celebrate but I was very happy it was over. I hope this story inspires you to chase your dreams even though they seem big."

Well done Theo, we are proud of you!
