The Children’s Diabetes Centre has had a few inquiries about the new BANDIT trial, based in Melbourne, and whether we are involved. Currently, the trial is only open to people with type 1 diabetes who live in Victoria.
The Centre is involved in other multi-site Australian studies aiming to better understand type 1 diabetes. They include:
- Type1Screen: This study offers free screening for the early stages of type 1 diabetes. It is available to all Australian and New Zealand residents aged two to 30 years who have a relative with the condition. For more information, contact Alison Roberts on 0423 209 349 or alison.roberts@health.wa.gov.au, or visit type1screen.org.
- Environmental Determinants of Islet Autoimmunity (ENDIA): ENDIA is researching the causes of type 1 diabetes so that we can find ways to prevent it. The study is following 1500 Australian children from pregnancy to early childhood to determine how various environmental factors affect the development of type 1 diabetes. Recruitment has now closed. For more information, contact study coordinator Alexandra Tully, alexandra.tully@health.wa.gov.au or visit endia.org.au.
- TrialNet: The goal of this TrialNet study is to test relatives of those with type 1 diabetes for antibodies in order to highlight individuals at risk of developing the disease. For more information, email Joanne O’Dea, joanne.o’dea@health.wa.gov.au or visit trialnet.org.
