Have your say on exercise

Adolescents and young adults with Type 1 Diabetes are invited to be co-researchers at a summit to help develop the Children’s Diabetes Centre’s new exercise gui

Adolescents and young adults with Type 1 Diabetes are invited to be co-researchers at summits to help develop the Children’s Diabetes Centre’s new exercise guidelines.

Researcher Leanne Fried said while exercise was an essential part of diabetes management, blood glucose response to exercise was affected by many factors which could stop people from being active.

“The current guidelines available for managing your diabetes around exercise vary and are challenging to follow,” Dr Fried said.

“Our research team is completing research in order to fill the gaps in the current guidelines based on what patients, families and the clinicians from the diabetes clinics have said.

“Our end goal is to develop more complete and evidence-based guidelines for people with Type 1 Diabetes to safely participate in a more physically active lifestyle.”

Dr Fried said before researchers tested the guidelines, they wanted input from young people with Type 1 Diabetes to help determine what the guidelines should contain and how they should be presented.

“We need to work with you, the people who will use them, to make sure we are meeting your needs and providing them in a format that is easy to use,” she said.

“We would like to invite you to become co-researchers in the development of exercise guidelines by participating in an exercise summit.”

The two-hour summit will be held at The Kids Research Institute Australia in Subiaco on March 15 for people aged 18-25 years, and on April 5 for people aged 13-17 years. The sessions run from 6-8pm.

There will also be a third summit for both age groups to review a prototype of the guidelines based on their input.

Participants will be reimbursed for their time and travel, and will be provided with refreshments and food.
