Young people with Type 1 Diabetes are needed for a new study looking at whether blood sugar levels affect exercise performance.
Karen Rothacker, an endocrinologist and diabetes researcher at Princess Margaret Hospital, said the study would find out if exercise performance in people with Type 1 Diabetes was affected by exercising with a high blood sugar compared to normal blood sugar levels.
She said exercise could cause blood sugar levels to go too high or too low which could deter people from working out despite the known benefits of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and helping to control weight.
To be eligible for recruitment, participants need to be aged 14 to 26 years, have had Type 1 Diabetes for more than a year and be free from injury or other illness which would affect their ability to exercise.
The trial is being funded by a Diabetes Research WA grant.
