COVID Update August 2022

We have been advised by the Department of Infectious Diseases at Perth Children's Hospital and the Wesfarmers Centre of Vaccines and Infectious Diseases at The Kids Research Institute Australia that COVID-19 vaccinations are now available for young children aged 6 months to 4 years with type 1 diabetes.

ATAGI Recommendation for Youth with Type 1 Diabetes under 5 years of age

Dear Families,

We have been advised by the Department of Infectious Diseases at Perth Children's Hospital and the Wesfarmers Centre of Vaccines and Infectious Diseases at The Kids Research Institute Australia that COVID-19 vaccinations are now available for young children aged 6 months to 4 years with type 1 diabetes.

The Diabetes Service supports the ATAGI recommendation and encourages families of children in this age group to receive their COVID-19 vaccination. Please note if your child has recently had COVID-19, it is recommended that you wait for three months from COVID-19 diagnosis before booking a vaccination appointment.

The Stan Perron Immunisation Centre at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) will have appointments available for the paediatric Moderna COVID-19 vaccination from Tuesday 6 September, and you can book an appointment now through VaccinateWA or by calling 13 COVID (13 26843).  You can also choose to be vaccinated at a number of participating GP clinics across WA. If you do not live near Perth Children’s Hospital or a participating GP clinic, please email COVID.immunisation@health.wa.gov.au and a clinic nurse will be in contact with you to make alternative arrangements.

Further information about the Moderna paediatric vaccination, and a fact sheet on how to speak to children about COVID-19 vaccines  are available.
