Dr Mary Abraham wins national diabetes research award

Congratulations to Dr Mary Abraham from the Rio Tinto Children's Diabetes Centre and Perth Children's Hospital, who has been awarded the prestigious Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) Lindsey Baudinet Rising Star Award in T1D Research.

Congratulations to Dr Mary Abraham from the Rio Tinto Children's Diabetes Centre and Perth Children's Hospital, who has been awarded the prestigious Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) Lindsey Baudinet Rising Star Award in T1D Research.

Dr Abraham was named winner of the of the award at the 2022 Australasian Diabetes Congress in Brisbane and received $20,000 in funding to go towards her study into the use of oral insulin in type 1 dabetes.

Dr Abraham said the 12-week study, due to commence later this year, aimed to see if oral insulin could be used alongside injected insulin.

“The success of oral insulin has so far been limited due to absorption issues, but we’ll be trialling an improved oral drug delivery system that has been designed to overcome this challenge,” she said
