Easter Tips: How to enjoy the special time and strike a healthy balance between enjoying easter treats and maintaining your healthy meal routine.

Easter is a special time of year to spend with family, friends and enjoy food together. But it can be a tricky time with lots of sugary treats at the shops, parties and at school.

The Rio Tinto Children’s Diabetes Centre at The Kids Research Institute Australia and Perth Children’s Hospital shares some top tips from Dietitian Melissa Kelly.

As it’s only once a year, you don’t need to cut out the chocolate. Here are some tips and tricks to strike a healthy balance between indulgence and maintaining your healthy meal routine.

Fill up with a meal before you go on an easter egg hunt.

  • Something high in fibre and protein like wholemeal toast with peanut butter or eggs on toast.
  • Help them feel fuller for longer so they’re less likely to scoff all the eggs in one go.

Consider purchasing a smaller sized easter egg or easter bunny or spreading out easter treats over a few weeks to prevent overindulging.

Consider spending time as a family and creating your own easter themed snacks and traditions that don’t revolve around food

For children living with T1D, read the labels or compare the carbohydrate content of different sized easter egg and bunny varieties to help adjust your insulin dose.
