The ENDIA study — Australia’s largest study into the causes of Type 1 Diabetes — reached a significant milestone when it recruited Anna Croll’s unborn baby — its 700th participant — in Perth recently.
Professor Elizabeth Davis, the lead investigator for WA’s ENDIA Study and co-director of the Children’s Diabetes Centre, said the study aimed to follow 1400 babies from pregnancy through to childhood to determine which factors triggered, or protected, the development of Type 1 Diabetes.
“ENDIA is a landmark study trying to discover why diabetes happens, and how we may be able to prevent diabetes,” Professor Davis said.
“We are excited to reach the halfway mark of the study, our 700th participant, and are looking forward to the study outcomes.”
Mrs Croll, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 18, said her diabetes specialist invited her to join the ENDIA study when she fell pregnant.
“I said ‘yes’ because I believe it is for a very good cause and it would be wonderful if researchers could find the true reason why some people get diabetes,” the 31-year-old Woodlands woman said.
