New Dexcom G6 receives TGA approval

The Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use in Australia.

The Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use in Australia.

As yet, there is no official date for its release and it has not been added to the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS). However, we are anticipating it will be available soon.

If you are currently using a Dexcom G5 and would like to change over to Dexcom G6, we recommend you start planning now.

Once available, you will be able to change over to the G6 when your Dexcom G5 transmitter has reached the end of its three-month life.

You will still be subject to the same annual limit on transmitters, regardless of whether it is G5 or G6, so it is not advised to change over before using all your current supply.

We recommend that you only access supplies that are currently needed and do not stockpile, as the Dexcom G6 uses different sensors and transmitter. We are encouraging planning to avoid waste.

If you are interested in the Dexcom G6 and are already using a CGM, an NDSS change of CGM form will be required, once it becomes available, to change over to this device.

For those using Tandem pumps and have G5 connected, there may be a slight delay in the software update to allow G6 to be displayed on the pump. However, G5 will continue to display on your Dexcom app.

A new app with improved functionality will be required when changing to G6.

This is very exciting news and we will update you further when the Dexcom G6 is officially launched.
