NovoRapid urgent product defect alert

We have been advised by Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of NovoRapid, that some circulating Novorapid cartridges may have small circular non-penetrating cracks on the outer surface around 4–6 mm below the ''shoulder'' of the glass cartridge.

These cracks do not influence the safety of the insulin itself, but there is a small chance of cracking and spilling of affected cartridges during handling. Importantly, insulin pens will not function if loaded with cracked cartridges.

We are told that Novo Nordisk have identified the cause of the issue which has been resolved. This alert also applies to Actrapid and Protaphane as well as some premixed insulins, but very few patients use these insulins.

Novo Nordisk have informed us and pharmacies that processes are in place to minimise defective products circulating in the community. However, should you detect a defective cartridge, or a cartridge with a circular crack as described above, it should be returned to your pharmacist for full replacement.

Please speak with your clinic team at your next appointment should you have any questions related to this information.
