Nutrition videos for young people living with T1D
Australian children living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and their families can now access trustworthy nutrition education videos to help them in making food choices every day.
We have created four short videos exploring difficult daily tasks such as counting carbohydrates and managing insulin and blood glucose levels with everyday food choices for a family. These videos were based on feedback from the diabetes community and reviewed by expert dietitians, on areas that are often tricky.
These videos have been created by Naomi Crosby, The Kids Research Institute Australia Nutrition Researcher and Perth Children’s Hospital Dietitian, with the help of researchers and clinicians from the PCH Diabetes Service and The Kids.
“The goal of our Centre is to improve the health, wellbeing and quality of life of children living with diabetes. A key way to do this is to give clear, practical advice on food and nutrition,” said Ms Crosby.
Nutrition and physiology/body concepts like digestion, hormones and glycaemic control are tricky to wrap your head around. We wanted to be creative and engage our viewers, to help give children and teenagers the skills and confidence needed to manage their T1D.”
The stars of the videos include Anika Epton, 11 years, and Emily Angelo, 12 years, who are both living with T1D.
Emily was diagnosed with T1D when she was 10 years old. She said when she was first diagnosed, she had a hard time understanding how to best manage her diabetes.
“I took part in these videos because I want to help other children who are diagnosed understand their diabetes better and I hope these videos will help make the management of diabetes easier and simpler for others,” said Emily.
For Anika, she chose to participate in the videos because she wanted to provide other newly diagnosed children with a fun and relatable way of learning about the condition.
“I hope these videos are a way other children with T1D can gain a better understanding of what T1D is and how to manage it properly,” said Anika.
