Congratulations to Dr Aniket Nadkarni who has been awarded the Rio Tinto Children’s Diabetes Centre; a JDRF Global Centre of Excellence, Top-up PhD Scholarship.
The Top-up PhD Scholarship is designed to provide additional support to exceptional PhD students who are undertaking their research in the type 1 diabetes (T1D) - related field.
Dr Nadkarni is an Intensive Care Specialist at Austin Health and PhD Candidate at University of Adelaide, Royal Adelaide Hospital Intensive Care Unit.
He received the funding support for his research project ‘Mitigating the short and long-term risks of stress hyperglycaemia: - GRETEL study: gastric emptying acceleration after fast and slow hypoglycaemic clamp - Continuous Glucose Monitoring accuracy during fast and slow hypoglycaemia'.
Dr Nadkarni said that hypoglycaemia in T1D impairs quality of life and increases mortality.
“As an intensive care specialist, advancing hypoglycaemia management is vital. This project will allow me to mitigate this risk in critically ill patients, improve management in individuals in the community living with T1D, and engage industry stakeholders who can guide technological advancements in glycaemic control.
“The GRETEL study will determine the effect of slower onset hypoglycaemia on the rate of gastric emptying.
“The outcomes will inform the management of individuals with gradual onset hypoglycaemia and will be particularly pertinent as the use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) will allow discrimination between rapid and slow hypoglycaemia and will affect the large number of individuals in whom the rate of gastric emptying is abnormally slow.” Dr Nadkarni said.
The Centre’s competitive scholarship program aims to support the next generation of researchers and health professionals in the Diabetes field. The scholarship has been made possible through funding support by Rio Tinto, Telethon Trust and JDRF Australia.
We are excited to announce that applications have now opened for our 2025 Honours and Masters Scholarships with the purpose of providing funding for students to develop and support their type 1 diabetes related research as part of their Honours or Masters degree. The scholarship consists of a once-off $5,000 AUD award.
