Q&A with Niru

Meet Nirubasini, or Niru as she is affectionately known among the Children’s Diabetes Centre team.

Meet Nirubasini, or Niru as she is affectionately known among the Children’s Diabetes Centre team.

Niru has been the clinical research coordinator for the team since 2004 and is actively involved in studies investigating the effect of exercise on children and youth with diabetes. Her other interests are the epidemiology of diabetes and technological advances in diabetes management.

We asked her a few questions to help to get to know her better:

Why did you decide to become a researcher? I was at a stage in my career where I needed a change. I needed to take on work where I could use both my biochemistry and nursing knowledge and experience.

What inspired you to get into research? I love the investigative nature (and novelty) of the work. The fact that good research may lead to great changes in health improvements and medical management.

What is your vision for your research? To make us healthier - physically and emotionally. Which in the end results in better individuals, families, communities and world.

What gets you out of the bed in the morning? An internal alarm clock! Life is good – personally and professionally.

What’s your favourite thing to do when you’re not at work? Playing board games, walking and dining with family and friends. And watching/reading cop/science fiction to unwind.

What did the younger version of yourself want to be when you grew up? A detective or a pilot.

What’s your favourite place to go for a holiday? Anywhere that I can do fun/adventurous stuff with my “childie-wildie” or my family is my favourite holiday destination.

What’s the one thing guaranteed to make you smile? The Family page on WhatsApp – we all have a dry sense of humour and are politically incorrect.
