Developing educational exercise resources to improve awareness and knowledge of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) within community sport settings.
Community sport is one of the most common settings in which youth exercise. However, there are a lack of educational exercise resources available in Western Australia currently, therefore, community sport coaches feel they lack the knowledge, confidence and understanding to provide adequate support for youth living with T1D.
The aim of the study is to:
i) develop a series of educational resources based on the identified information that youth living with T1D, parents and community sport coaches deemed to be important and
ii) to explore the acceptability and usability of the resources with members in community sport settings.
After interviewing over 30 WA sports coaches, parents and players with T1D we have developed a draft set of educational resources to help coaches support youth living with T1D participate more safely in community sport.
The next steps will be piloting our resources with sport coaches before we officially launch these resources into the sporting community.
