Our researchers are involved in a new nationwide program aiming to better detect a child's risk of developing type 1 diabetes.
Type1Screen offers free antibody testing to children and young adults to determine if they are at risk of developing type 1 diabetes as early detection of the condition can prevent serious health problems and bring about a better prognosis and management of the condition in the longer term.
People who are found to test positive are monitored closely and, if they develop type 1 diabetes, will be started on insulin early to avoid serious illness.
Type1Screen is available to all Australian and New Zealand residents aged two to 30 years who have a relative with the condition.
