Hybrid Closed Loop and Difficult Foods Study

Managing blood glucose levels with different foods can be challenging. Our research team would like to know how the hybrid closed loop system, deals with these foods, compared to standard pump therapy.

Managing blood glucose levels with different foods can be very challenging.

Our research team have been listening to families and know that some foods make it more difficult to manage blood glucose levels.

We would like to know how new technologies such as the hybrid closed loop system, deals with these foods, compared to standard pump therapy.

Who can participate?

We are looking for:

  • people aged 8 – 18 years
  • who have had type 1 diabetes for more than 12 months
  • HbA1c ≤8.5%
  • on hybrid closed loop therapy for ≥1 month and using auto mode
  • willing to consume the test meals containing meat (pizza and pasta)
  • access to internet

What does participation involve?

You will need to be available for one online virtual digital clinic session. There is no need for you to visit the Perth Children’s Hospital as everything will be explained to you through an online video call. During this online session, we will go through the study in more detail and you will see a dietitian to be re-educated on how to deal with foods high in fat and protein on standard pump therapy. After this, there will be a 2-week run in period to optimise your insulin regime.

Over the next four weeks at home, we would like you to eat a specified pasta and pizza dish eight times. On each study day, you will be asked to fast for three hours before and seven hours after the dinner meal. We will be looking at your continuous glucose monitor trace after each of the test meals to see how the two systems deal with these ‘difficult foods’.
